Scented oils linked to abnormal breast growth in males
THE lavender and tea tree oils found in some soaps, shampoos, hair gels and body lotions can produce enlarged breasts in boys, researchers reported today. These plant oils were linked to abnormal breast development in three boys, which was reversed when they stopped using them, Dr Clifford Bloch of Pediatric Endocrine Associates in Greenwood...

Baby It's Cold Outside
Baby It's Cold Outside and wouldn't a candle from Wick-edly Sent make it feel warmer. We have been busy refilling our shelves from our Black Friday Sale and now have a great selection of our holiday scented candles along with the regular line. Also, while digging around in the basement I found a box of holiday mugs and have a limited pour on our Hot Chocolate Scented Soy Candles in a festive snowman mug. Remember our candles are made with soy wax and high quality scent and burn clean with our lead free wicks. So brave the cold and stop in and see us and who knows you might even catch me singing!

Holiday Candles!
Rudolph called to tell us that Santa has packed on a few pounds and Dasher, Comet, Cupid, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Donner and Blitzen would appreciate it if you would not leave cookies and milk for the old fella seeing as they are tired of hauling him around. They would much prefer one of Wick-edly Sent's Holiday Candles!
Dasher and Comet like the comforting blend of Pumpkin and traditional spices in our Pumpkin Spice. Vixen, Dancer and Donner agree that the Balsam Fir reminds them of the North Woods where they grew up. Blitzen likes the refreshing blend of mint and luscious chocolate in the Chocolate Mint. Cupid prefers our delightfully fruity blend of Cranberry and Orange in our Cranberry Orange Candle which is also the November's Scent of the Month! Prancer goes for the Blend of Bayberry, Spice, Clove in our Bayberry Candles. That leaves our Apple and Cinnamon in a glowing red that Rudolph just can't enough of. They also wanted me to remind you that our Holiday Candles are made with soy wax that burns clean, evenly, and lasts 80-100 hours long! Comes Gift Wrapped in box with bow and our wonderful soy candles are made in our shop in Canandaigua! So let's do our part and leave Holiday Candles for Santa instead of the cookies they would really appreciate it.

Setting the perfect holiday table
I ran across these tips for setting a great holiday table and thought I would pass them along.
We all want our holiday parties to be perfect. We plan a wonderful menu and cook and clean for days in advance. But many people spend all their time and energy on the food, and neglect the other important aspects of a party. Table décor and room arrangement are just as important as good food to the success of a gathering.
Unfortunately, most hosts don't think about these things until the last minute, and often just throw something together. Here are some ideas for creating a functional and attractive environment for your party, with some help from the experts at FoodTV.com.
The best way to avoid stress is to put together a plan in advance. Think about where your guests will sit. Don't try to cram too many people around a small dining room table. If necessary, add another table and cover them both with one long cloth. The point of a party is to provide a fun opportunity to socialize and that won't happen if guests are squeezed uncomfortably together. If your chairs won't fit, try using a bench on one side of your table.
Another way to make more space is to place all the food on a buffet table. Set up one room as the buffet area, and once guests have been seated, move a few dishes to the table so people don't have to get up for seconds. You can also set up a separate dessert table in advance, so you don't have to worry about it after dinner. Don't forget your serving pieces, make sure they are clean and ready to go. Nothing is worse then having your food ready and running around looking for the serving pieces.
Setting a festive holiday table begins with the right china. Use grandma's bone china or your collection of miss matched treasures. Add some edibles as table arrangements such as apples, cinnamon sticks, pears, gourds and even dried corn. Another idea is to fill interesting jars or containers with flowers, cranberries or dried fruit. Throw in some candles arranged among little heaps of apples and nuts. Scented candles you be avoided when setting the perfect table. At Wick-edly Sent we have a great selection of smokeless, dripless and odorless tapers in wonderful holiday colors.
Keep centerpieces and decorations low so they don't interfere with conversation or with the food. Boughs of fresh pine or cedar are an easy and fragrant decoration that won't get in the way. To complete the holiday look use fabric remnants to make holiday table runners or simply wrap your table in holiday paper. Gold or silver paper can make a dramatic statement and will set off your china.
So when you start thinking about your next party, don't just focus on the menu. Think about your decorations and arrange your rooms in advance, and you'll be able to enjoy your gathering as much as your guests.

Where has Fall Gone?
It is really hard to get into the Fall mood and make warmly scented candles when it is 80 degrees out! Whatever happened to Fall? I think we need to call in the blood hounds to sniff out Fall or we could just wait 24 hours and the weather will change. For those of you who haven't been in the store lately our scents for this season are Pumpkin Spice, Apple Cinnamon, and Orange & Clove. So stop in and give your nose a treat!!!

The Importance of Smelling Good
Smelling good is something important to everyone. You wouldn't go around smelling like you haven't bathed for a month now, would you? Although I've encountered some people who'd make me eat those words. It's amazing also how so many people are self concious about how they look: prim and proper hair cut, ironed clothes so stiff that you can bounce a quarter, and enought cologne or perfume to drown a duck. These people place looking good and smelling good high in their priority list. However, it's amazing how many of these people have stinky homes or apartments.
I know, I know, it's an unfair presumption, and not all of their homes can smell like a candle maker's home. Our home, in case you wonder, has a mixture of food scents, then a mixture of candles, lotions that the entire family has (different scents of course), and reed diffusers that are in every room. Not to mention the smelly jellies in our the bathroom, or closets, or the nine kinds of soaps because no one likes the same smelling soaps.
Regardless, what I am ranting (or blogging about), is that I have the maximum overdrive of scents, but some homekeepers do not have a single scent in their home. Ziltch, no candles, smelly jellies, or reed diffusers. Unless you are sensitive to smells, pick up a soy candle, and start smelling good. You don't want an unexpected visitor to find out that your house smells like mold, or what you cooked from yesterday, or dirty laundry that's been piling up, or the castle of your precious (cat/dog/canary). Be responsible, and remember that if you smell good all the time, your home should too.

Reed Diffusers - New Fall Scents at Wick-edly Sent
Canandaigua, NY, September 04, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Reed diffusers sell for a wider audience. People who couldn’t burn candles can happily purchase one with assurance. College students, people in assisted living, and mothers can leave a reed stick diffuser in their children’s bedroom in confidence. Consumers at first didn’t have a lot to choose from, faced with diffusers with scents that were once popular with candles, but now reborn into a diffuser.

Why do we make soy candles?
Most of the time, when someone arrives in our store and are in awe of the spectacular candle case, they ask us if our candles are made with soy wax. "Yes", we reply, it's a soy blend. Nine times out of ten people asks us "What's the difference?". Well, for those of you who haven't mustered up enough courage to ask, or feel like we'll give you a hard time for not knowing, here are the benefits of soy:
- Soy Candles burn cleaner.
- Soy Candles are better for the environment.
- Soy Candles last longer.
Burning cleaner means less black smoke or soot. As an added benefit, we now include a smoke free zinc wick (don't worry, it's not lead). Better for the environment means that it's not the traditional all parrafin base that is most often used by other companies. Soy candles actually lasts about a third longer than other candles. Some people say twice as long, but I won't, it certainly depends on where you burn them. Keep them away from drafts, and trim the wick before lighting them every time, and you'll see them last even longer!

Don't Get Bugged, Get Wick-edly Bugged!!
It's that time of year for being outside and with that comes the bugs, bees and mosquitos. Don 't let them get you down stop in for one of our Wick-edly Bugged Rice Bowls Candles filled with Lavender, Peppermint and Cintronella essential oils. These cute bowls really do the trick and if you don't feel like burning a candle, try our all natural bug repellant spritz. A great addition to any trip to the beach, lake or or a night out at CMAC.
Here's a funny story. Don and I were at a concert last summer sitting on the hill at CMAC when the mosquitos were extremely hungry and a two ladies infront of us produced a bottle of Wick-edly Bugged from their stylish tote and started to spritz themselves. Don and I both looked at each other and smiled and then one of the ladies offered the bottle to us. We laughed and introduced ourselves and had a great bug free evening.
So the next time you're heading out, grab a bottle of Wick-edly Bugged, you never know who you might meet.

The Envelope Please
Do I hear Oscar nomination for our latest addition to Wick-edly Sent. Of course I am speaking of our new video that was added to our website. With his new camera Don rolled into production casting some very understanding customers and Matt into lead roles. Like true troopers they jumped right in and filming began. The part of voice over was played by me, not that I had alot to choose from. It was either voice over or Norma Desmond and I don't think the world is ready for me as Norma Desmond. Well enjoy the video and hope to see you either online or in person real soon.

The End of May
What there's to say about May?
Lilac comes to an end of our scent of the month, and we are exhausted but happy at the response we've had with this scent. June will be a new surprise, with more in tact. We have in store baskets, scents, and other eye opening favorites in store. We are also open to opinion, comments, and suggestions. Maybe you know of a scent that is simply irresistible, or maybe you've had a pleasant experience in our store that you'd like to share.
The summer soon will begin and we will forget about the bad energy in our lives, remember the past, and the promise of a brighter future again. Kids will leave class feeling like they never have before, and most likely, your summer will be filled with games, sporting, and other fun things. We hope that this summer will be a great one. One that will be filled with memories, glorifying moments that can be captured in a candle, lotion, soap, or other fine product. Memories that can be carried with you as a souvenir for you always.

Links, Links, Wick-edly Sent Needs Your Links
It's amazing how many people come in our store who've never been in saying that a friend sent them. We are finding that customer referrals are our strongest advertising. If you've been in our store and have referred someone, thank you! There are many ways to link to people, this is one way, and linking is another.
If you like our site, why not bookmark our site under your favorites? We now have a favicon so our site is easily recognized by the red firefly and the letters "W" and "S" in the address bar, near the URL. Adding us to your favorites is a quick way to reach our site.
And finally, posting a link to our site from your website or blog is the best way to help us. Help us improve our customer base and listings with more links to our site. You can use the text Wick-edly Sent Scented Candles as the link text, just make sure it points to our correct url: http://www.escentedcandle.com. We really would appreciate a link to our site, the more links the more popular our site becomes. Of course, only have a link to our site if you feel it is useful and informative. If you have any questions about linking just call me at 585-394-5260, or toll free at 1-888-467-WICK. Thanks for your time, Don Stevens.
Making the Customer Happy
Today we had a customer roll in here asking for our Cedarwood and Lemongrass essential oil shampoo. She is a regular and explained how needs to wash her hair with that shampoo because it really really works! We didn't have it on the shelf, but we did have the ingredients and the essential oils. I jotted her number down and a few hours later called her. Before the day was through she came back and took her shampoo home. She couldn't believe the customer service and how we can go that extra mile. Although she is a regular and a happy customer, there are so many other customers out there who haven't experienced our superior service. It's fair to note that the same day someone came in for LILAC perfume and we were out. We will be making more next week, and she is happy that we will be making more. Instead of just saying we are out, or sorry tough luck, we will try to do our best and keep everything in stock, and contact you when it's available. But please remember, the same wonderful scents in candles and/or soap is probably someone else's too.

From Trash to Treasure
A big thank you to Ellen for the latest addition to Wick-edly Sent's walls. Ellen supplied a table that she had put in her trash pile but thought we might be able to do something funky with it. A little paint and a couple of screws and up on the wall it went. This new addition gave us a great place to display baby photos, next time your in take a glance up at Matthew, Little Ricky, Brynn and Liam. I would have taken a picture but Don got this new camera and I can't operate it! We look forward to seeing you in person or online and until then, don't forget that someone elses trash can be your treasurer.

Our Olive Oil Soaps
If you haven't tried our olive oil soaps yet, you don't know what you're missing. These hand made soaps are made by yours truly, filled with olive, palm, and coconut oils. Each 12 bar batch includes 2 pounds of imported Italian olive oil! Wow, that's soothing.
Actually, customers have claimed that they do not have to moisturize after using this moisturizing soap. Even people with sensitive skin can rest assured that these whopping 7 oz bars are gentle enough to use on your face, hands, and body.
Hope you like variety, scents include the best selling Vanilla Almond Nutmeg, Apricot Peach, my favorite: Lavender Basil, and the best selling Oatmeal Milk and Honey. There are plenty more in our store, and a few that will be announced later in the Summer.
These make perfect gifts, and people are grabbing three or four at a time. We do free gift wrap with a nice presentation. Tips on making your soap last longer is keeping it on a soap dish that will let it drain properly.
Hope to see or hear from you soon,
--Don

Sunday at Wick-edly Sent
Here's a suggestion on having a lazy day in Canandaigua. Stop in at Blue Dahlia grab a cup of Joe and a muffin or cookie and read the paper. Make sure you say hello to the knitters and when your ready stroll next door to Wick-edly Sent and have a leasurely browse through our shop. The aromabar is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon or smell our scented soy candles and enjoy a visit with Phoebe who is always willing to wag her tail and give a kiss and Madison is always good for a barking spree. If you are in need of a gift we are always happy to help. Assemble a gift basket with lotions and candles or choose from one of the many premade that are reasonable priced. Before leaving Wick-edly Sent, don't forget to check out the latest arrivals in Cinderella's located in the rear of Wick-edly Sent. Enjoy your Sunday and remember life is short, stop and smell the candles!

Early Mornings at Wick-edly Sent
Holly from 13 WHAM visited our store on Friday 6th in the early morning. For those that were still asleep we have attached a link to the video. It was a great visit highlighting the aroma bar and our richly scented soy candles that are popping with spring colors and scents. Thank you to Nicole Mahoney from the Canandaigua BID for setting up the visit. WHAM also visited our neighbors, Wildflowers, ICON and Stellas. All were great sports in getting up extra early for the broadcast but it was alot of fun!

Burning your scented candles
Sometimes we forget the basic principles of burning our soy scented candles. We have customers who praise our candles and tell us that they burn all the way through, while some tell us that the candles leave a well down the middle or leave black soot.
While some batches may differ due to scents, wicks, temperatures while pouring, and other factors, the only other reason may be not following the basic principles of burning candles.
Here they are:
1. Keep away from drafts. Sometimes we don't pay attention to where are candles are placed while burning. While they may be visually appealing on the dining room table, on the fireplace, or near the window, feel and see where a draft might be influencing a burn.
2. Trim the wick. Trim the wick 1/4 inch, or what you feel best suited. You'll see sometimes a mushroom top on the wick before you trim it. This will reduce black smoke and or soot.
3. Leave a candle burning for at least a few hours, we recommend 3-4 hours at a time. When you burn a candle for only an hour or two, you'll actually see the burning pool point, or memory burn. This expands the longer you burn the candle. So if it only burns for a short time, it will continue with a well, burning down before it reaches the end of the jar.
4. Remember, NEVER burn a candle unattended.
We hope that you follow these basic steps to burn a jar candle properly. This steps should work with any candle, not just ours, and remember, if there is still a problem, it may be due to the batch itself.
If you have any questions, or comments, you can always call us at 585-394-5260, or toll free 1-888-467-9425.
Thanks,
Don
